The match was notable for the partnership between new signings Jo and Robinho, who linked up for two of the club’s six goals, while Robinho also squeezed some impressive saves out of the Portsmouth keeper.

“Robinho pulled the strings time and time again for us. All the goals were superb,” City manager Mark Hughes said after the match. “I thought he was the outstanding player. He has been for our past four games.”

Manchester City will be back in action in the UEFA Europa League on the 2nd of October when they take on Cypriot champions AC Omonia, carrying a one goal advantage into the match.

With the club’s new star signings begin to pay dividends, and backed by a big budget, Manchester City would appear to be easily out of reach of the other clubs in the UEFA Europa League.

“It was the best performance by one of my teams by a country mile. Portsmouth are a good side but they were not allowed to play their game,” Hughes concluded.
