Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is not taking victory for granted as Villa head into their encounter with Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjordur this evening.
While the Irishman’s squad has been bolstered by a flurry of new signings this week, including former Rangers midfielder Carlos Cuellar, he is determined not to repeat the mistakes Rangers made when they perished at the hands of FK Kaunas last week.
“When you see Rangers getting knocked out of the Champions League, having reached the UEFA Cup final just two months ago, you realise how easily it can disappear from you,” O’Neill told Goal.com. “ It’s up to us to beat them – it’s as simple as that. We’ve got to get through the tie.”
O’Neill went on to claim that his side’s Premier League pedigree should help them make the most of their trip to Iceland, backing his players to maintain focus and obtain the result needed to progress through to the next qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
“This is one of the biggest weeks of my time here at the club,” O’Neill concluded. “No doubt about it. The Premier League is almost upon us and we have a big, big game in Iceland tomorrow night.”
