Arshavin trapped at St. Petersburg

UEFA Europa League winners Zenit St. Petersburg have rejected bids for star striker Andrei Arshavin from the likes of Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Russian club has raised Arshavin’s price tag to 27 million Euros in the hopes of ending attempts to lure the club’s most valuable player into one of the bigger European leagues.

Arshavin is unhappy with his club’s attempts to retain his services and has expressed a desire to leave for greener pastures. However, the increase in his transfer fee means he is likely to stay in St. Petersburg for at least another season.

“My desire to leave is still as strong, but there is nothing more to do now other than hope for a miracle,” Arshavin told the Sport Express. “I understand perfectly well that if I don’t move on now, I probably never will.”

While Barcelona have given up on their bid for Arshavin’s services, Tottenham are persisting with their attempts to recruit Arshavin to their attack. Spurs coach Juande Ramos is reported to have targeted Arshavin as a replacement for departing striker Robbie Keane.

“When a coach shows an interest in you, especially such a renowned and strong coach, then that is already half of the success of any move,” Arshavin continued. “I also like the way Tottenham play, so I agreed in principle to join.”
