City blitz Faroe Islands

Manchester City’s expedition to the Faroe Islands paid dividends this week, when the side scored a comfortable 2-0 win over EB Streymurin in the first leg of theirĀ  2008/2009 UEFA Europa League qualifier.

The Faroe Island part-timers had no answer to the class and power of the Premiership side, who scored through Dietmar Hamman and Martin Petrov. Hamman’s goal was his first in 95 games.

While City could have easily pushed home their advantage and squeezed more goals out of the game, they played within themselves once the win had been assured.

The win is Mark Hughes’ first since being put in in charge of the side, and the Manchester City manager will go into the second round of the qualifying tie knowing that his side have the beating of the Faroe Island minnows.

Other news from the Manchester City camp is that Mark Hughes has targeted West Ham United striker Braig Bellamy for his side’s 2008/2009 UEFA Europa League campaign. City are set to make a bid for the talented striker in the hopes of adding penetration to their attack.

Bellamy has played for Hughes before, serving as his striker in both the Welsh and Blackburn football teams.
