2008 UEFA Europa League quarterfinal results
The four semi-finalists for the 2008 UEFA Europa League were decided on the 10th and 11th of April during the second round of the 2008 UEFA Europa League quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals came close to providing a massive upset when Spanish minnows Getafe came within a breath of knocking German giants Bayern Munich out of the 2008 UEFA Europa League.
The Spanish club held Bayern to a 3-3 draw during the second leg of their quarterfinal tie, ending the tie with a 4-4 aggregate draw. Bayern’s three away goals ultimately proved sufficient to propel the Germans into the semi-finals.
Scottish side Rangers will be joining Bayern in the semi-finals after knocking out Portuguese UEFA Europa League hopefuls Sporting Lisbon with a 2-0 victory in Lisbon. The game saw Lisbon squander their home advantage as Jean Claude Darcheville and Steven Whittaker scored for Rangers in the second half.
Meanwhile Zenit knocked Leverkusen out of the UEFA Europa League, despite the Germans achieving a 1-0 win in the second game of the quarterfinal tie. The 4-2 aggregate win sees Zenit reach the UEFA Europa League semi-finals for the first time in its history.
The final tie of the 2008 UEFA Europa League quarterfinals saw Dutch side PSV dumped out of the tournament by a spirited Fiorentina side. The Italians beat PSV by two goals to book themselves the last of the UEFA Europa League 2008 semi-final places.
